We excel with two top content management systems
WordPress
WordPress is the Internet’s most widespread and rapidly growing web development platform, empowering over 35% of the web. Its backend interface is intuitive, backed by a powerful, versatile rich text editor.
Drupal
Drupal, an open-source platform, offers advantages in cost, flexibility, freedom, security, and accountability. It presents a user-friendly interface for effortless content creation and publishing. It is trusted by organizations worldwide for various applications beyond corporate websites.
WordPress vs Drupal
When it comes to comparing Drupal and WordPress, Drupal has the edge for more complex use cases. Both Drupal and WordPress are leading CMS (content management) systems used worldwide to run millions of websites. These systems possess various characteristics and can serve different purposes, making it challenging to determine the optimal choice for a specific use case.
To better understand the differences between the two systems, let’s use an analogy. If WordPress is like Lego, then Drupal is like clay. Both can be used to build similar things, such as houses or cars, but each has its own distinct characteristics, strengths, and limitations.
With Lego, you can quickly assemble a model resembling a house or car. However, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to create an exact replica of a real-world object. Think of this in terms of level of detail or complexity that applies to software as well. If you require an accurate representation of a real-world object, you may need to rely on workarounds or hacks because Lego bricks alone won’t provide the level of detail you need.
Having built the same life-like model of a house (or an application with a lot of complexity) with both Legos and clay, we realize that we have spent roughly the same amount of time on both. Although the houses have the same level of likeness, one is architecturally superior. The clay house is robust and stable as it’s made entirely from clay. It’s easy to extend or modify by simply cutting away or adding another piece of clay to incorporate the desired feature. On the other hand, the Lego house is a brick model that has been extended using glue, paper, or whatever materials were available at the time of construction. However, it is not as solid of a base for maintenance, extension, and modification compared to the clay house.
Another angle how this can be thought of is the concept of “Effort over time.” WordPress allows for quick setup and the creation of a small website. There is a wide selection of available themes and plugins to extend the core system. Out-of-the-box, WordPress “just works.” However, as you customize the platform further, making changes becomes increasingly more effort intensive.
With Drupal, it’s the opposite. When building a site with Drupal, you start with a system that is not preconfigured for a specific use case. You need to invest upfront effort to configure the system according to your needs. However, as you continue to extend the platform and add custom, complex functionality specific to your business, it requires relatively less effort. The core system of Drupal is designed to be highly extendable at every level.
In simple terms, with Drupal, you make a larger upfront investment, and as you extend the site over time, the effort required remains relatively low. With WordPress, the upfront investment is smaller, but as the site evolves and complexity increases, the required effort becomes relatively higher.
Both platforms share similarities and offer benefits over other systems. They are open source, eliminating the need for commercial licenses or subscription fees associated with proprietary or SaaS solutions. Additionally, both Drupal and WordPress are based on the PHP programming language, requiring a similar skillset from the development team.
Compared to SaaS platforms like Wix, both Drupal and WordPress are fully open and customizable, allowing seamless integration with other systems and deployment to the infrastructure of your choice.
